CALL FOR ART “Windows into PARC” A unique indoor/outdoor exhibit

[Add normal info re submission deadline, Gallery Exhibit start/end dates, etc.]

Background and Vision

Around 1980, the window openings for the historic 107-year-old former school building that now houses the Plymouth Arts & Recreation Complex (PARC) were mostly or completely “filled in” (to conserve energy). In 2023, as a key part of efforts to restore the building’s historic character, PARC re-opened the vast majority of original openings and installed about 350 original-size, energy-efficient windows. Due to various construction projects through the years when it was a school, however, it wasn’t possible or sensible to restore some of the original openings.

PARC is now asking local artists to submit high-resolution images of artwork (new or existing) for potential display in the filled-in former windows. This exhibit is called “Windows into PARC” because it should evoke activities or scenes that one could imagine seeing if these were actual windows into the wonderfully diverse and dynamic Plymouth Arts & Recreation Complex.

A customary two-month indoor exhibit is planned for the PARC Art Gallery, from which select works may also be chosen for the long-lasting outdoor exhibit.

The outdoor exhibit will be displayed this year on the building’s northern-most wall (facing the parking lot, also visible from Adam’s Street). Expansion to cover more or all of the approximately 20 total filled-in window openings is possible.

Compensation for Outdoor Exhibit

PARC will pay the artist $600 for a high-resolution image of chosen artwork. (The image will be sized by PARC to fit a window opening and reproduced on a medium that we believe will be capable of lasting several years installed outside.) The artist will retain ownership of the original artwork; PARC will have the right to use the image for publicity or other purposes.

In addition to monetary compensation, artists will receive long-lasting recognition following completion of the outdoor exhibit on a graphic display describing the exhibit and providing a schematic that identifies art locations and the artists.

Review Process

The indoor exhibit in the PARC Art Gallery will be curated, as normal, by a committee of PARC resident artists. Art for the outdoor exhibit will be chosen by Patty and Mark Malcolm (the couple who bought the historic building and grounds and charitably donated it to become PARC).
